South Star Pilgrimage
A 10-day walk, from the glacial majesty of Mt Aoraki to the sweeping expanse of the sea, in the Waitaki Valley of New Zealand.

A reflective journey inward to develop ourselves as environmental stewards.
And a shared experience of kinship, staying with landowners in the valley.
We seek
to understand how we each care uniquely for the land of this valley,
and use opposing ideas to spark new growth.
We contend
with what it means to own land, water and sky.

Every great journey begins with a point of orientation.
A fixed, unchanging beaconthat helps us find our bearings through steep and uncertain terrain. As we follow the braided currents of the Waitaki River, we step deliberately into nature.
We walk.
To observe how movement invites questions, on the constructs that bind us.
To challenge what it means to own land, water, or sky.
To shift our gaze from consumption to profound communion.
Every day of our journey offers dedicated rhythm of movement, mindfulness, and creation.
Whether we are:
-
Sketching with earth pigments,
-
Foraging sustainably
-
Vavigating the dark skies of the Mackenzie Basin
-
Burning through the fire of personal commitment
Our walk translates our reflections into a living body of work.
Following the Waitaki River
Our maiden journey will be captured in a short documentary:
“The river between us – confrontation and kinship in the Waitaki Valley”
Designed to share our unique perspectives on what divides us, and unites us, in caring for this place we call home.

We are building a community for this project.
We are seeking those to walk with us, those to host us and those to support us logistically and financially.
Use the form below to express what you have to share, even if you are not sure exactly what that is yet, express that.
We will follow up with all applicants via a coffee or phone meeting so, you can find your best way to get involved with South Star Pilgrimage.
